From The Editor

So it was that TheBrit and TheYank discovered each other on Twitter. Twitter, that damnable social microblogging site that’s awash with social media whores, blog feeds, scam artists, spammers, and occasionally some real people. What’s the chance of two like minded music lovers finding each other amongst its millions of users through a handful of seemingly random connections? Exactly – it’s all Twitter’s fault.

And it’s also all High Fidelity’s fault too, because without that movie, TheYank wouldn’t have bulldozed into TheBrit’s life back in October 2008 demanding to know his top five all-time favourite bands – with the sub-question: is it better to go out at the height of glory or better to fade away? The answer to the former might appear at some point here, but TheBrit was well prepared for her question, given his obsession with keeping music related lists, at least mentally, despite having never watched the movie. (If TheBrit was “well prepared,” then where is the answer?? TheYank)

Other minor (MAJOR! All we talked about was MUSIC. Old men and their dementia, sheesh! TheYank) musical discussions followed on Twitter, mostly revolving around Joy Division (one of TheYank’s passions) and Scandinavian Pop (TheBrit’s current musical fetish) before TheYank quickly whisked TheBrit off behind the bike sheds to get to know him better. And it was there that their casually expressed desires to collaborate on a music blog were seeded.

But it wasn’t until three months later when they decided to share playlists (which is a very High Fidelity thing to do) that TheYank suggested a blog instead. That way they would get to exercise their musical brains in the name of research, maybe discovering new music in the process, and they would introduce others to a more diverse selection of music than other blogs might provide. TheBrit agreed immediately, either because he’s easy, or maybe he was drunk at the time – he can’t remember. (A day TheBrit is without wine or beer is a day that the sun hasn’t risen. —TheYank)

While playlists are the key to the formation of this blog, they’re not stopping there. Both have written about music on personal blogs or professionally in some capacity for a number of years, so it makes sense to bring those skills with them. Album and concert reviews are the most obvious consequence, but they’re picking up an idea launched on Twitter, namely “Song o’The Day” and “Album o’The Day,” but they are not stopping there. The genius behind this blog is the “top five” thematic schema they came up with and which, for now, will be the main point of the blog.

There’ll be nothing off-limits. They just love music. And they’re pretentious. As they say so eloquently: “Deal with it.”

Note: we hope to have individual bios for TheBrit (once he’s sober) and TheYank (once she’s done her homework.)
